The single rule worth memorising: going to a smaller unit makes the number bigger, and going to a larger unit makes the number smaller. You do not need to trust a single calculation. A few quick checks will catch almost every mcg/mg error before it matters.

  1. Check the direction. Smaller unit, bigger number. If you converted mg to mcg and the number got smaller, stop — something is reversed.
  2. Check the magnitude. Every correct mcg/mg conversion changes the number by exactly three zeros. If your before-and-after values differ by two zeros or four, a decimal slipped.
